The Alexander Nevsky Lavra was founded by Peter I. The word "Lavra" is a title reserved for the highest-ranking monasteries.The Alexander Nevsky Lavra is particulary known for its necropolis containing the tombs of many famous Russians.These are interesting not only for their famous inhabitants but also for their monumental mausoleums and elaborate funerary art.
It is a complex of 16 religious buildings including the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Nunnery and Necropolis.
Walking though the park near the monastery, you will notice a large yellow buildings behind a fence. This is a St.Petersburg Orthodox Theological Academy and Seminary, where both clergymen and regents of the church choir are trained.
